Our Inclusion Statement

Brooklands Primary School is a school where we believe that every pupil has an entitlement to develop their full potential. Educational experiences are provided which develop pupils’ achievements and recognise their individuality. Diversity is valued as a rich resource, which supports the learning of all. In this school, inclusion recognises a child’s right to a broad, balanced, relevant and challenging curriculum, which is appropriate to their individual abilities, talents and personal qualities.

This is to ensure that all children get the right support at the right time and in the right way so they develop to their full potential and participate as much as possible in the life of their local community.  This requires each child to be involved in a range of appropriate educational and social experiences.

Meeting Children’s Needs

Classroom teachers work hard alongside teaching assistants to provide work appropriate to the children’s needs and often work with small groups or individuals to enable them to make the best possible progress. Teachers keep detailed records about children’s achievements and attainments and match work to individuals’ abilities whenever possible. Should it arise that a teacher is concerned about a child’s progress there would be communication with parents before any decisions are made about whether or not to formalise a programme of support. Part of this might be the drawing up of an Outcome Focussed Target Sheet, which would be discussed and agreed with the child and parents regularly.

Supporting Children with SEN

We have access to a variety of external agencies to help us support children. We have developed strong links with SENDIS, The Behaviour Support Team, Speech and Language, the Educational Psychologist and the Advisor for ASD & Communication. We can make referrals to these specialists to visit school and  assess children to see whether there is either a specific need or, alternatively, something specific we can do to address the child’s need. A referral to the Educational Psychologist or other external agency would only ever be made with parental consent.

Working together

Parents are the experts when it comes to knowing your children and therefore we believe in working in close partnership to ensure the best possible education for every child. Should you have any concerns about your child, or their ability to access the full curriculum, please do not hesitate to raise them with the class teacher in the first instance and then with Miss Low.
