Baking Heroes – Children in Need

17th November 2014

We looked great in our aprons on Friday and had a great time being baking heroes!

Thank you to everyone that donated a cake for our cultural bake sale. We had a plethora of different cakes from around the world. See a few pictures below.

Thank you so much for your generosity at our cake sale. We felt like our school community pulled together to make Children in Need a fantastic event! We can’t wait to find out how much money we have raised in total across the school.

All the cakes that were left over from the bake sale were donated to Willen Hospice. They were very grateful for the sweet treats for their visitors over the weekend.

Restorative Practice Parents Workshops

17th November 2014

A huge THANK YOU to all the parents that came to the Restorative Practice workshops that we held this week.

We had some fantastic feedback about how useful the sessions were in helping parents understand the principles and practices of what we do at school.

We will be holding a second session going into more depth about the practices that we do at Brooklands Farm and how this could help you at home. We will let you know the dates for this session in due course.

We will also be repeating this introduction to Restorative Practice throughout the year. Please look out for the sign up sheets. It is a fantastic opportunity to get an insight into our practice at Brooklands Farm.

The Plague comes to Brooklands!

17th November 2014V Holloway

As year 5 arrived at school this morning they were transported back to the year 1665. Boys and girls were separated into different classrooms, with the teachers being very strict, much like in a Stuart era school. The morning started with the boys and girls learning, in silence, an extract from Shakespeare’s Macbeth which they then had to recite to the class.

For the remainder of the morning the girls learnt valuable skills such as sewing and baking, ensuring they were well prepared to be housewives! They baked gingerbread biscuits and also practised their handwriting.
The boys also practised their handwriting and spent time playing games such as chess and draughts. Mr Peters was very strict!
However throughout the morning we noticed Miss Courtney coughing a lot, then she started scratching and big red boils appear on her arms! As she spread her germs, the illness started affecting some of the year 5’s and they came out in red ringed rashes! Eventually, we decided to quarantine those who were displaying symptoms and called the Doctor. The doctor confirmed that they had the Plague so a red cross was put on the door to warn others that it was contaminated with the Plague!
After lunch, to help protect us from the Plague we made herb bags just like they did in the Plague in 1665. We used cloves, rosemary and thyme, along with some mint and rose essence. Also, we made silhouettes of rats to decorate the corridors with!
Finally, because our final product is to make a Horrible History episode about the Plague, we watched some episodes of Horrible History.
Year 5 had a fantastic time igniting the Plague today and can’t wait to continue their learning about it in order to create their Horrible History documentary.

R.E. Day

17th November 2014V Holloway

Year 5 have had a fantastic day exploring Christianity through lots of different activities. We have learnt about the Bible and how Christians use it to teach them about God and the world, the 10 Commandments and about influential Christians like Desmond Tutu and William Wilberforce.

We did lots of fun activities including research on the iPads, lots of discussion, drama, making comic strips and presenting our learning!
