5 little men in a flying saucer

By 22nd November 2015

This week we have been looking at one less using aliens. Our favourite song to sing this week has been:

“5 little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day.

He looked left and right but he didn’t like the sight,

so one man flew away… whoosh!

4 little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day.

He looked left and right but he didn’t like the sight,

so one man flew away… whoosh!

3 little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day.

He looked left and right but he didn’t like the sight,

so one man flew away… whoosh!

2 little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day.

He looked left and right but he didn’t like the sight,

so one man flew away… whoosh!

1 little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day.

He looked up and down and he saw a little town,

so he decided to stay… whoosh!”

Big Art Colours

By 22nd November 2015
This week at Big Art we looked at different colours.
What happens to colours as they mix?
How can we use different colours?
We started by looking at colours on our projector.

The children had a go at spinning colours to mix them together:
The children had fun mixing different coloured rice and sand.

We also made rainbows with coloured pots.

There was also a lot of different discussions about how the ‘alien food’ felt.

Year 1 at Fen Street need your recycling!

By 22nd November 2015

The Year 1 children at Fen Street will be focusing on materials over the next two weeks as part of their project ‘Through The Key Hole’.

The children will be conducting lots of scientific experiments to find out which materials are windproof and waterproof in order to build their very own street  of houses.

The Year 1 team are collecting as much junk modelling as possible to help the children build their spectacular creations!

If you have any cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, bubble wrap and recycling materials you wish to dispose of PLEASE bring them into school and drop them off at the Year 1 entrance where there will be a box for you to put your donated materials in.

Thank you for your support.

Year 1 Team

5,4,3,2,1 blast off!

By Mrs l Jenkins22nd November 2015

During Parliament time the children chose to make rockets. After they completed them the class helped to ‘review’ their peers learning. We say ‘green’ means they need to continue and ‘grow’their learning to make it even better and ‘gold’ means they have achieved it’got it!’ The children could all celebrate the children’s achievements and could give some helpful advise about what else the rocket needs to make it even better. E.g. “It needs fire” “It needs a door and some Windows”

Name writing

By Mrs l Jenkins22nd November 2015

The children are becoming more confident writing their names this week.
Most of the children can write their initial letter of their name now.
A very big Well done to Lucas for being able to write his ‘L’ this week⭐️
If the children can write their names they can begin to write, ‘I am (name).’
I have introduced them to the song I have written to help them remember their finger spaces.
Finger spaces, finger spaces,
After each word, after each word,
So it’s not one long word,
So it’s not one long word,
Now we can read it,
Now we can read it!

Becoming ‘authors’

By Mrs l Jenkins22nd November 2015

Wow! Starfish class have turned into superstars this week! When they chose what to do during ‘Parliment time’ they wanted to make their own individual ‘whatever next’ books. A lot of the children continued focussing on this throughout the week. They were able to add more pages from the story and talk confidently about the pictures. In ‘Parliament time’ the children ‘plan, do and review their own learning’ with the support of the adult. We looked at writing words from the story and using the sound mats to help them write, for example baby and moon!
For example, baby, what sound can you hear first? Do you know what it looks like? (Locate it on the sound mat) What sound comes next when you say baby, b…a and continue on.
Well done with becoming ‘authors’ this week⭐️🌟

Acting out the story, ‘Whatever Next’

By Mrs l Jenkins22nd November 2015

The adults scaffolded the child led play when they were role-playing their moon adventures! They were talking about directions, landing on the moon, how you move on the moon and more importantly what you eat on the moon. Lots of children were on a 4/5 involvement level for a long period of time!
