Lantern festival

By l hearn27th November 2015

This week year 2 have been writing about the Lantern Festival. Here are sections from a few children’s writing:

“I felt excited because I saw fireworks.”

“It was dark at the festival and we had to achieve, work hard and do well.”

“I was nervous performing in front of the parents.”

“I felt happy because it was an amazing night.”

Busy start to the half term!

By Mrs L Odell19th November 2015

What a fantastic and BUSY start to the half term!

Most of you by now will have met our trainee teacher, Michael Edwards who is a PGCE student from Edge Hill University. Michael will be with us until February and is already a popular member of our class!

Our Ignite event went incredibly well last week. The children learnt so much from the chocolatier and it really helped to bring our chocolate project to life! I would also like to thank parents for helping the children with their chocolate related homework. The children already had so much knowledge so we were off to a flying start!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came to parents evening. It was great to share your child’s learning journey so far and hear some of your thoughts about how the year is going so far.

This week the children have started learning about fractions and have really blown me away with their attitudes to learning something new! During curriculum tea, many of you expressed concern about your children learning fractions. I am pleased to inform you that the children are already able to talk about and explain the role of the numerator and denominator as well as recognising fractions of shapes and writing fractions 1/2 1/4 2/4 and 1/3! The children also noticed the link between division and fractions and keep talking about “equal groups”! Such super stars!!

Finally, we have had so much fun practising for the lantern festival and we are excited to share this amazing event with you all once again! Please remember to leave your children at school on Friday! The festival begins at 5pm and should last approximately 45 minutes. I will escort the children back to the classroom and will hand them over to you as normal at the door. Please DO NOT take your children from the Mugga! It is of upmost importance that I hand your child to you personally to ensure their safety.

Thank you for you continued support. As always, I am around to answer any questions at the beginning and end of the day. Alternatively, leave questions or comments for me via our website and I will get back to you.

Year 2 musicians!

By Mrs L Odell23rd October 2015

This half term we have enjoyed our weekly music sessions with specialist music teacher Mrs Knight. The children have been learning how to maintain a beat using percussion instruments and practising rhythms. They even know how to distinguish between pulse and rhythm! Many thanks to Mrs Knight. We are looking forward to more super music lessons after the half term! 🙂

Year 2 super learning

By 20th October 2015

I had the opportunity to work with some wonderful children today supporting writing.

The children created, constructed and reordered bossy sentences. They then worked together to improve their spelling and composition.

I am so proud of their work!

Well done year 2

Year 2 Science dilemma!

By Mrs L Odell6th October 2015

As part of our project about Lighthouses, we have been learning about the properties of materials.

Miss Low heard about the fantastic learning that was happening in Year 2 and posed us a dilemma… With all her travelling back and forth to our two sites, she keeps forgetting her lunch! Miss Low suggested a rope to transport her lunch from one school to the other (like in The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch!) but could we make a waterproof lunch box to make sure she wouldn’t have soggy sandwiches if it rained?!

We chose some materials to test and wrote our predictions as to whether they would be waterproof or not and why. We then tested the materials and wrote our findings.

We are well on the way to designing a waterproof lunchbox for Miss Low’s sandwiches! Hooray!!

Year 2 learn about neurotransmitters!

By Mrs L Odell20th May 2015

In Year 2 we are thoroughly enjoying Brain Week! We wanted to find out more about our brain and what we can do to keep it healthy.

We found out that our brain can tell you how your body feels and that the chemicals that do this are called neurotransmitters. When the neurotransmitters in your brain are out of balance, it can stop your brain working properly!

There were three different neurotransmitters that we learnt about today.

  • Serotonin makes you feel happy. It is responsible for serenity and happiness. If you have too little serotonin on your brain you might feel down or unhappy.
  • Glutamate is needed for learning and memory…but if you have too much it can make you feel angry and irritated!
  • Dopamine makes you feel energetic and excited, but if you have too little dopamine you might start to make bad choices!

We wondered how to balance the neurotransmitters. We thought it might be tricky! Luckily, you can eat foods that will help to keep the neurotransmitters in balance!

Tomorrow, we will be finding out what foods we can eat to balance our neurotransmitters!
