Future lunch box designers in Year 2!

15th October 2014Mrs L Odell

Class 2a had a great time this afternoon in their science lesson! They were given a dilemma and had to carry out an investigation to find a solution.

I bring a sandwich to school for my lunch but my water bottle leaks and I end up with a soggy sandwich! Can you find out which material will protect my sandwich best from water and from being squashed?

The children had great fun finding out what happens when a sandwich is submerged in water! The children recorded their findings and were using fantastic scientific vocabulary including the words absorbant, transparent and… soggy! They then used heavy objects to find out what materials helped protect the sandwiches from being squashed!

Here is a picture of the children exploring with tissue paper, tin foil and bread!

We found lots of heavy objects to squash the bread!

Grace Darling experts in Year 2!

15th October 2014Mrs L Odell

In Year 2 we have been learning about Grace Darling. In 1838, Grace became famous after she and her father rescued survivors from the shipwrecked SS Forfarshire.

We had a visit from a RNLI volunteer who taught us lots about water safety, lifeboats and more real life stories.

We were also excited to find an indoor beach in school! We enjoyed sketching it and used it as an inspiration for a new setting for our own version of ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’.

This week we will be continuing our writing with character descriptions, problems and resolutions!

Thank you to everybody who came to our curriculum tea on Monday. It was great to see so many of you! The children spent the day baking fairy cakes, rock cakes, making flap jacks and sandwiches which they thoroughly enjoyed! Oscar said it was just like ā€˜The Great British Bake Off’!

In Year 2 we areĀ learning about the heroic historical figure, Grace Darling, who rescuedĀ survivors from the shipwreckedĀ ForfarshireĀ in 1838. In order to understand how modern water safety has improved, we had a visitor from RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution). We learnt all about the lifeboats and the special clothing that these voluntary lifesavers have to wear. We even got to try on some life jackets ourselves!

By admin4th September 2014
What a puzzling start to the day we had in Year 2! We came in this morning to discover that someone had had a birthday party in our classroom! There were party plates, party cups, birthday cups and even some left over birthday cake! We had to do some detective work out whose party it was. Some of the clues were: a giant bow tie and a bar of Wonka chocolate, a snozcumber, a yellow handkerchief and a dream jar, a large saucepan and empty medicine bottles…And a pile of books! Can you guess who was at the mystery party? And more importantly, Ā whose party it was? Come and find out from us whether you guessed correctly!

We had an exciting and busy first day back at school. The children have spent most of the day putting their detective and reasoning skills to good use, trying to find out who had attended a birthday party in our classroom whilst we were away! Photos to follow.

Thank you for returning the home learning this morning. The children enjoyed sharing thier projects with the rest of the class this afternoon. They all look wonderful! Well done! šŸ™‚
