Amazing growth mindset in year 4

By J Francis21st May 2015

All week we have been testing our brains to see how we like to learn best.

Not only that, we have been trying to develop our growth mindset so that we always say ‘I can I can I can’ and keep growing our learning.

This morning the learning zones in Year 4 were amazing! Everyone had a growth mindset and nobody minded if they had to re-draft their work. In fact, lots of children chose to do this several times to make sure their work was the best it could be!

Well done year 4!  We are extremely proud.  Your new growth mindset will help you achieve fantastic things.

This picture represents our learning this week.  Two children using all three learning styles – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic – and a growth mindset to take their next steps in maths…

What type of learner are you?

By J Francis19th May 2015

During Brain Week year 4 are investigating the best way of learning!

Yesterday we researched different parts of the brain and created mini cake brains which we have labelled to remind us of the parts we use when we are learning.

Today we talked about the ways we like to learn and throughout the week we will carry out mini investigations to put them to the test!

Miss Downey thinks she has a photographic memory and is a visual learner but Miss Roberts learns best when the task is auditory and visual…

We would love to know what type of learners our parents are too. What strategies did you use to learn your times tables and spellings at school?

Coming soon to a corridor near you…

27th March 2015J Francis

As we were so inspired by the mosaics we saw on our trip to the Verulamium we decided to create our very own for Brooklands!

On Wednesday an artist came to school to help us make a piece of history for the school, which will last for years and remind us of our core values, Open, Grow and Believe.  Here are some sneak previews of the children’s amazing work…

A Magical Afternoon at Brooklands

27th March 2015V Holloway

Yesterday afternoon saw Year 5’s Harry Potter project come to an end as they shared their learning and lessons with year 3 and 4 children. Wand skills, potions and quidditch were the three lessons being planned and taught by the year 5’s. They really enjoyed sharing their learning journey and were very responsible as they ‘taught’ the skills and knowledge they had learnt to the younger children. Harry Potter has been a fantastic project in Year 5, they have all really engaged with it and we have seen some outstanding work and amazing progress being made as a result! Well Done Year 5!

Year 4 travel to become archaeologists

28th February 2015admin

This week, year 4 became archaeologists and investigated the ancient Romans. They had an amazing day at the ancient Roman town of  Verulamium near St. Albans, becoming Romans, touching and investigating real Roman artifacts and seeing some incredible mosaics that they were allowed to run their hands over.

The children were incredibly excited throughout and after their ignite day and they have some wonderful ideas for their project.

500 Words strikes excitement through year 3 and 4!

6th February 2015admin

Across year 3 and 4 today, children have been involved in an ignite day for the 500 word competition for Radio 2! Each classroom has been set up with a different theme; The secret garden, portholes, dinosaurs, a crime scene and a magic box. Children were taken on a series of journeys with a range of resources, visual aids and mysteries to solve. All children have now begun writing their stories and will complete these as homework over the weekend to submit next week:)

Year 4 get lost in the woods

9th December 2014admin

Year 4 had an amazing day today at the woods, learning about deciduous and evergreen trees and being able to link traditional tales to the forest. The children were able to create stories and their imagination was inspired. We had stories ranging from a family of mice that have to take care of the trees to moles in waistcoats and glasses that have to care for the other animals.

In the afternoon, the children were challenged to find as many invertebrates as possible. This prompted several “ewwws” as children found millipedes, centipedes and the scariest of all invertebrates, the spider.

The children could not wait to get back to continue their tree week learning and were full of questions.
