Year 6 VW week important information

17th October 2014admin

On Monday we have an exciting opportunity to view a range of vehicles from the VW group.

Children will be outside for at least an hour and a half looking at the vehicles and understanding the specification of each car as part of their learning for next week. We will be going out even if it rains!

Please ensure that your child has a waterproof coat to wear on Monday and is wearing their normal school shoes and uniforms. If your child would like to bring an umbrella, then please do so. Please note: that these umbrellas should only be used on Monday to view the cars not for break or lunch time. The umbrellas will be stored in the PE boxes after these sessions.

Thank you for your support

15th October 2014Miss Rebecca Snowdon

Year 6 had a great Internet Safety session on Monday with our visitors from Hazard Alley. We learnt about the risks that are involved with using the internet, how to identify these risks and how to protect ourselves.

Take a look at our pictures.

On-line Safety Sessions in Year 6

15th October 2014admin

We had an excellent OnlineĀ Safety session with the people from the Safety Centre yesterday!

The children talked through their use of social media and internet access both at home and at school and discussed the pros and cons of different experiences and scenarios that either they themselves or other people have faced.

We learnt that children’s brains are still developing therefore they need to protect themselves with the images, games and other materials they are seeing. We also learnt that children need to switch off their electronic games an hour before their bedtimes to ensure a quality night’s sleep! This shocked the children!

We also discussed our privacy settings on our social media, phones, the internet and games. The passwords we have were referred to as a toothbrush; it is personal to you and you wouldn’t share it with anyone!

Finally, the children learnt how to protect themselves from cyber bullying. The learnt that by keeping texts, emails and any other written content they have is an evidence trail which might be useful. We also learnt that any messages sent by any phones, emails, game consoles or social media leave a digital footprint. The children now know the saying ‘zip it, block it, flag it’ which will ensure they can keep themselves safe online.

The children have developed some next steps which they can follow up at home to Ā make themselves safe. These are:

  • Children need to look at their ‘friends’ on their social media sites or games and ask themselves; are these really friends that I know and trust? If not, delete them!

  • Children need to check their security settings on their social media or any other electronic equipment they use and make sure they are set to private which only your friends can see. Parents, please check your children’s security settings on social media if you are allowing them to be on there.

  • Please visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk with your child for information, games and more about the CEOP advice button- which can be used to report abuse online.

Cracking Code breaking day out!

5th October 2014admin

Year 6 had an inspirational and exciting trip where they went to visit ‘Station X’, now a museum, at the famous Bletchley Park (home of the World War Two Code Breakers).

The children had a tour of the museum and were able to see ‘The Bombe’, the machine which contributed to deciphering German codes sent by the Enigma machine, in full action as well as seeing all the other parts of the museum.

Children also had the amazing opportunity of having specialists from Bletchley Park talk to them about toys and the development and change of toys through World War Two, the development and change of communication, where we even got to communicate, using radio signals, to Russia, Austria and Spain! Finally, the children learnt how to be agents and learnt how to crack different types of codes. The children were exceptionally fortunate to have a go at sending and deciphering codes on the famous German code making machine ‘The Engima’.

We had a brilliant day! Here are some of our photos:

3rd October 2014Mrs c Hern

Yesterday, the digital literacy leaders had their first session teaching the staff of Brooklands Farm.

We set up the classroom into three stations and had set programs, websites and apps to discuss. The staff looked like they had a fantastic time and enjoyed sharing new ideas with each other. They especially liked the look of Padlet and augmentedĀ apps.

We can’t wait to see some of these new ideas being used in the classroom.

The digital literacy leaders, were very confident and showed that they had a good understanding! Well done!
