6b Real Science Day at MK Discovery Centre!

28th October 2014admin

6b had a break from VW week to join the Real Science event at the Milton Keynes Discovery Centre.

We started the day by learning about the dangerous dust Asbestos. We learnt that while it can be highly dangerous it can also be used to sound proof, add strength to or control the heat of buildings.

Our next session involved us getting up close and personal to Tinkerbell… the pony! We learnt the history of horses and their uses over the years. We also learnt that ponies are becoming increasingly endangered. We ended our session by getting to stroke Tinkerbell and some of us even fed our left over apples to her!
Following this, we had a session on Design Press, printing anywhere! We learnt the process of printing images, pictures and drawings onto various cups and t-shirts. We then took part in a competition to design a bookmark! The winning design will be printed onto a bookmark and sent into school after half term!
After a quick break we were back to learning! Our next session involved learning about the ‘flight or fight’ response in our body. The children really enjoyed the expert’s enthusiasm for the topic and learnt a lot about the hormones involved in our responses and reactions.
Following this, we had a session on Gel making! The children had a talk from a representative from the global company P&G. They even had a go making their own gel!
We then had a break for lunch! We had so much fun running around the grounds of the Discovery Centre.
After lunch, we were back to more exciting learning. Our next session was one of the children’s best sessions. It was about bee hives! We learnt loads about bees, including pollination and the threats to bees in the wild. We even got to try some honey!
Following our bees session, we then had an amazing session which again was one the children’s highlights of the day, with the Canal River Trust. We looked at different types of bridges and the uses of bridges. We then looked more at the structure and then had some team work problem solving activities to make our own bridges!
Our last session of the day was about water and soil. We learnt about the properties of different types of soil and we now know an experiment to test them out. Watch out parents, children will be testing your soil in your gardens! We looked at the different soils under the microscopes and noticed lots of important characteristic of soil and how it helps us to live.
Thank you to all the parents for their support in dropping their children at the Discovery Centre. Thank you to all the experts for giving us the most brilliant science day out and for inspiring the children to be scientists in the future! Also, thank you to Mr Atkins for joining us and helping us out all day!
I think you can agree, it was a jammed packed and exciting day for us all in 6b!

Year 3 VW Trip

28th October 2014admin

Well, what a day! Year 3 have had an amazing trip to VW Training Centre where they got to see some amazing cars, such as an Audi R8, a Hulk car from the Fast and Furious Toyko Drift, An XL1 worth £80,000-£100,000, the E-Up electric car and even a bullet resistant car worth £400,000, Wow! The children asked great questions and received some great answers. They were keen to gather as much information inside the garage as possible. They even got the opportunity to have first hand training on the E-Up electric car inside one of the training centres conference room. The VW staff commented on the good behaviour and outstanding knowledge of the year 3 team and we couldn’t be more proud of their efforts and successes today!

Forcasts and targets lesson in Year 2!

28th October 2014Mrs L Odell

This morning the children enjoyed a fantastic lesson led by Joseph Cooper from the VW group. Joseph is a Sales Planning and Reporting Analyst and taught us all about his job. We thought it sounded like good fun so we spent some time allocating a selection of new cars to different dealerships. We had to choose from affluent Chelsea, busy Birmingham and the Scottish highlands and had to justify why particular cars would be more likely to sell in those areas. The children were fantastic at explaining their reasons. Well done everybody and a huge thank you to Joseph for such a fun and interesting lesson!

Here are a couple of snaps from today’s lesson.

6C Real Science

23rd October 2014Mrs c Hern

Today, 6C had the pleasure of attending a Real Science event at the Discovery Centre.

During our sessions the children got to learn about compost, poisons, the immune system, solar panels, magnetism, how horses have evolved into ponies, the chemical process in printing inks and copper cables. Our subject knowledge has really extended today and the children have come away with lots of interesting facts.

The children especially enjoyed holding worms and stroking Tincher Stryder, the pony!

Sparks of Excitement In Year 3!

23rd October 2014admin

Wow! What an amazing few days the children have had. We are sure you have heard all about it!

On Monday, 13 different VW cars were parked on the playground. Year 3 had the chance to not only look at the cars, but to get inside them AND even sound the horn….. you can imagine the headaches at the end of the day!  The children absolutely loved it and are sure to have a brand new Audi convertible on their wish list! 🙂

On Tuesday the children were visited by The AA which included vans, a motorbike, a flatbed lorry and of course more horn beeping! Despite the wind and rain, the children had constant smiles on their faces and were excited to explore some of the roles within The AA.

Vrooooommm!!!

23rd October 2014

WOW! We have had a very exciting start to out week. Everyone was very excited to visit the VW and Audi cars as well as the AA Breakdown vehicles this week. This inspired us to start to think about our own safari vehicle and what we would like in our own car. We will keep you posted with our final design!

Class 2b Visit the SEAT garage

22nd October 2014admin
Class 2b were lucky to visit the SEAT garage on Monday where they learnt how to sell a car. The staff in the SEAT garage were kind enough to show the children around the showroom, giving us tips on how to be the best salesperson. We learnt that you start by doing a ‘Meet and Greet’ with a customer. Then you find out what type of car they want. The fastest selling SEAT is a Leon Cupra!

Watch this space for more photos of the children being salespeople in our very own showroom!
