Grace Darling experts in Year 2!

15th October 2014Mrs L Odell

In Year 2 we have been learning about Grace Darling. In 1838, Grace became famous after she and her father rescued survivors from the shipwrecked SS Forfarshire.

We had a visit from a RNLI volunteer who taught us lots about water safety, lifeboats and more real life stories.

We were also excited to find an indoor beach in school! We enjoyed sketching it and used it as an inspiration for a new setting for our own version of ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’.

This week we will be continuing our writing with character descriptions, problems and resolutions!

Amazing Teamwork

15th October 2014jenniferhover

This week in the maths area we have been learning about measuring. Today we became maths investigators who had to hunt around the classroom to find things that were bigger and smaller than a ruler.

We worked brilliantly together as a team, taking in turns and maintaining a high learning zone for the whole task! Well done boys!

We also showed our determination and labelled all of the objects we measured.

Senses – Food Tasting

15th October 2014jenniferhover

We have been learning about our senses.

Today we focused on taste. We tried eating salty crisps, bitter chocolate, sweet sweeties and sour lemons!

Here are some pictures of us eating the lemons! We couldn’t help pulling funny faces!

Year 3 Greek Olympics

15th October 2014admin

Year three would like to warmly thank all of the parents who gave up their time to celebrate the Greek Olympics with them. This event marked the end of a fascinating project on the Ancient Greeks where the children investigated how the Olympic Games have changed since ancient times and also how the Greeks lived from day to day. We also wrote our own version of an exciting Greek myth. We are now gearing up for the next part of our year 3 learning journey…watch this space!

Lead Learners Journey Begins!

15th October 2014jenniferhover

On Monday the Lead Learners met for their first training session.

We looked at the observation format that they are going to use when observing in the classrooms.

We practised observing using a video that has clips of wellbeing and learning zones . We discussed the scores we would give the children and our reason behind our decisions.

The Lead Learners have got a jam packed timetable over the next few weeks and they will be popping in and out of all of the classrooms in school on the look out for high wellbeing and learning zones!

Watch out for them!

On-line Safety Sessions in Year 6

15th October 2014admin

We had an excellent Online Safety session with the people from the Safety Centre yesterday!

The children talked through their use of social media and internet access both at home and at school and discussed the pros and cons of different experiences and scenarios that either they themselves or other people have faced.

We learnt that children’s brains are still developing therefore they need to protect themselves with the images, games and other materials they are seeing. We also learnt that children need to switch off their electronic games an hour before their bedtimes to ensure a quality night’s sleep! This shocked the children!

We also discussed our privacy settings on our social media, phones, the internet and games. The passwords we have were referred to as a toothbrush; it is personal to you and you wouldn’t share it with anyone!

Finally, the children learnt how to protect themselves from cyber bullying. The learnt that by keeping texts, emails and any other written content they have is an evidence trail which might be useful. We also learnt that any messages sent by any phones, emails, game consoles or social media leave a digital footprint. The children now know the saying ‘zip it, block it, flag it’ which will ensure they can keep themselves safe online.

The children have developed some next steps which they can follow up at home to  make themselves safe. These are:

  • Children need to look at their ‘friends’ on their social media sites or games and ask themselves; are these really friends that I know and trust? If not, delete them!

  • Children need to check their security settings on their social media or any other electronic equipment they use and make sure they are set to private which only your friends can see. Parents, please check your children’s security settings on social media if you are allowing them to be on there.

  • Please visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk with your child for information, games and more about the CEOP advice button- which can be used to report abuse online.

We are going on a Sid hunt!

15th October 2014

Our class puppet Sid had been missing for several days. We missed him terribly especially in literacy. Sid wasn’t sat on the chair ready to hear all of the wonderful books we had been making in the book making area.

In literacy we have been reading and learning about the story ‘We’re Going On a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen.  The children decided that rather than going on a bear hunt in our lesson they would much rather go on a Sid hunt.

So we put on our coats lined up and sang…

“We’re going on a Sid hunt.

We’re going to catch a short one.

What a cold day, we’re not scared.”

It wasn’t long before we came across some obstacles but we stayed together and eventually we found Sid…in the staff room enjoying some peace and quiet with a cup of tea in his tiger mug!

“Uh- oh! A corridor!

A long straight corridor.

We can’t go over it.

We can’t go under it.

Oh no! We have got to walk through it!”

Once we had returned Sid back to our classroom we sat down together and turned our adventure into our very own story “We’re going on a Sid hunt”.

We worked together to sound out our words.

Sid is very pleased to be back in the classroom and he loved hearing his story.

🙂

The Jewellery Shop

15th October 2014

In Foundation we have been looking at our core book, Elmer this week. Elmer has such a beautiful multicoloured pattern that inspired us to create our own patterns with beads for the jewellery shop.

Look at our high involvement levels while we work hard to make our patterns with the very fiddly straw beads.

Exploring Shapes

15th October 2014

Last week we explored 2D shapes by finding out if we could make the shapes using the wooden blocks.

It was tricky to find curved blocks to make a circle and blocks that were the same length to make the sides of a square. We had to work together as a team to be successful.
