Skim and scan video – great for practising your ‘find and retrieve’ reading comprehension questions!

By Miss Rebecca Snowdon24th February 2016

The video below is a short one minute video explaining the essential reading skills of skimming and scanning a text to find information and to read at speed.  Both skills are vital for you to practise in preparation for your ‘find and retrieve’ reading comprehension questions!

The website also has other pages that go into these explanations in more detail and there are practise tasks provided.  A great one to do at home – enjoy!

Growing beans in our greenhouse!

By Mrs S Taylor24th February 2016

We have been checking up on the beans we planted during our ignite day. We have added a little water to them to help them grow. They are getting lots of sunlight in the shared space. We will update you on how they are getting on soon.

Writing skills

By 24th February 2016

This week in Literacy we have been working on sentence structure, ensuring we have full stops and capital letters in all of our sentences and using connectives correctly. Can you make a sentence out of the following words and punctuation?

.     and    The    cat      is   Small   fluffy

We will also be coming up with our own stories and using adjectives to enhance them. Stayed tuned for some of our creations!

Our ignite: growing

By 24th February 2016

On Monday we ignited our new project “Growing”. We sowed sunflower seeds in compost and have chosen weekly gardeners to keep them watered. We have also begun growing runner beans in plastic cups so that we can see how the bean grows. We have already seen the beans begin to crack open! We will be keeping bean diaries to check their progress.

On Tuesday we tasted some fruits from around the world. We learnt about pomegranates, mangoes, pineapples, lychees and passion fruit. We thought the passion fruit looked slimey and enjoyed how sweet the mangoes tasted!

Theatre company performance about the brain

By admin24th February 2016

Year 5 just before the end of the last half term had the pleasure of enjoying a fantastic performance by a theater company all about the brain. We really enjoyed the performance and learnt lots about the brain and how to deal with stresses.

Lego electricity ignite

By 23rd February 2016

Wow!!! We had so much fun during our ignite morning!! The children built a lego village, they then made electrical circuits to make their houses light up! They even got to make a train move along the tracks! I have never seen so many learning zone 5’s! Best of all Mr Garside who came in to do the workshop said he was so amazed by the behaviour and maturity the children showed! We are proud of the children every single day but for someone else to say it just proves how wonderful they are!

We think the photos will speak for themselves!
