Literacy

In GPS (grammar punctuation and spelling) this week we have focused on sentence types and in literacy we have been writing a character description of an elephant.

SC: Simple sentence = a verb and a noun. E.g. The elephant (noun) roared (verb).
Compound sentence = Two simple sentences joined by a conjunction. E.g. The elephant roared after he heard a gunshot fire.
Complex sentence = Contains one simple sentence (main clause or independent clause) and one or more dependent clause ( embedded, relative or subordinate clause (part of a sentence that wouldn’t make sense by itself), where commas are used to separate the different clauses.

E.g. Slowly creeping down the lake, the elephant roared loudly.
Challenge 1: Write 3 simple sentences about an elephant.

Challenge 2: Write 3 simple and 3 compound sentences about an elephant.

Challenge 3: Write 3 compound and complex sentences about an elephant.

Maths

We have been collecting knowledge on addition and subtraction, linking it to the inverse and estimating in maths.

Task:

Below are completed calculations using the methods we have been practicing in class.

Can you use your understanding to check whether they are correct? (*Remember you can use the inverse operation to check an answer*)

Success criteria:

  • Copy the sums out in your book.
  • Use an appropriate method to work out if they are correct.
  • Show your working out.
  • If they are incorrect, can you explain their mistake?

*IMPORTANT: You only need to complete 1 challenge and should spend 20 minutes on this task*

Challenge 1:

  1. 46 + 53 = 89

        4 6

     + 5 3

        8 9

  1. 56 + 33 = 88

            5 6

         + 3 3

           8 8

  1. 35 – 12 = 27

            3 5

          – 1 2

            2 7

Challenge 2:

a)   147 + 135 = 272

     1 4 7

  + 1 3 5

      2 7 2

b)   158 + 139 = 288

           1 5 8

        + 1 3 9

           2 8 8

             1

c)   199 – 148 = 161

      1  9  9

   –  1  4  8

       1  6  1

Challenge 3:

a)   381 + 97 = 1351

           3 8 1

          +  9 7

        1 3 5 1

               1

b)   343 + 97.5 = 718

         3 4 3

        +  9 7.5

         1 3 1.8

                     1

c)  5793 – 4827 = 1974

          5 7 9 3

      –  4 8 2 7
