4D Creative designers

By admin30th September 2016

Year 4 have been busy creating designs for our library and independent spaces in key stage two. First we learnt about measurements, then drew designs labelling the sizes and objects we were using and then finally we have used all the resources brought in from home and by school we have created our very own new spaces.

Great learning zones and they look great!

Year 4 Homework Please return your homework by Thursday 6th October

Literacy

In GPS (grammar punctuation and spelling) this week we have focused on sentence types and in literacy we have been writing a character description of an elephant.

SC: Simple sentence = a verb and a noun. E.g. The elephant (noun) roared (verb).
Compound sentence = Two simple sentences joined by a conjunction. E.g. The elephant roared after he heard a gunshot fire.
Complex sentence = Contains one simple sentence (main clause or independent clause) and one or more dependent clause ( embedded, relative or subordinate clause (part of a sentence that wouldn’t make sense by itself), where commas are used to separate the different clauses.

E.g. Slowly creeping down the lake, the elephant roared loudly.
Challenge 1: Write 3 simple sentences about an elephant.

Challenge 2: Write 3 simple and 3 compound sentences about an elephant.

Challenge 3: Write 3 compound and complex sentences about an elephant.

Maths

We have been collecting knowledge on addition and subtraction, linking it to the inverse and estimating in maths.

Task:

Below are completed calculations using the methods we have been practicing in class.

Can you use your understanding to check whether they are correct? (*Remember you can use the inverse operation to check an answer*)

Success criteria:

  • Copy the sums out in your book.
  • Use an appropriate method to work out if they are correct.
  • Show your working out.
  • If they are incorrect, can you explain their mistake?

*IMPORTANT: You only need to complete 1 challenge and should spend 20 minutes on this task*

Challenge 1:

  1. 46 + 53 = 89

        4 6

     + 5 3

        8 9

  1. 56 + 33 = 88

            5 6

         + 3 3

           8 8

  1. 35 – 12 = 27

            3 5

          – 1 2

            2 7

Challenge 2:

a)   147 + 135 = 272

     1 4 7

  + 1 3 5

      2 7 2

b)   158 + 139 = 288

           1 5 8

        + 1 3 9

           2 8 8

             1

c)   199 – 148 = 161

      1  9  9

   –  1  4  8

       1  6  1

Challenge 3:

a)   381 + 97 = 1351

           3 8 1

          +  9 7

        1 3 5 1

               1

b)   343 + 97.5 = 718

         3 4 3

        +  9 7.5

         1 3 1.8

                     1

c)  5793 – 4827 = 1974

          5 7 9 3

      –  4 8 2 7

          1 9 7 4

Class 3b Aspirations and Inspirations Homework!

By admin23rd September 2016

Our transition project this year explored the topic of ‘Inspirations and Aspirations’.

In class 3b the children produced some excellent pieces of homework, setting themselves targets at school and outside of school, as well as recognising the resilience and determination needed to reach our goals. The children thought about their aspirations for now and the future, and shared these with their class. Here are two children from 3b who produced a video for their homework on this topic!

We hope you enjoy!

Esio Trot writing hats

By admin12th September 2016

Year 2 have been getting ready to write with enthusiasm and use all of our knowledge. We have created some writing hats to help us get into the mindset for writing as we focus on Roald Dahl and Esio Trot. These will help us remember what to put into our writing.

What a fantastic start to year 2 made by all year 2 on Countess Way! 2D has settled in so well to the class routines and has even begun year 2 learning which is amazing.

We have been focusing on Roald Dahl as a significant author and have combined our knowledge of George’s Marvellous Medicine and capacity to design our very own marvellous medicine. The children have worked calmly to produce their medicines, ensure we had no spillages, worked accurately to read their scales and they used their incredible imagination to think up an incredible concoction.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer and look forward to hearing all about it in September! Thank you for working so hard these last few weeks.

Transition to Class 3b!

By admin21st July 2016

The last 3 weeks have been very busy in 3b! We have done lots of getting to know each other, learning and exploring inspirational people! The children have all settled in wonderfully and have really taken ownership of their classroom. We are all ready and set up to come back in September and start our year 3 learning! Have a great summer 3b!

We all had great fun being involved in using basketball wheelchairs and practising steering, turning and going under bridges!

We also had Kate Gray come in a visit us. She is a Paralympic swimmer who really inspired us all to set ourselves goals, believe in ourselves and others and remember that nothing is possible by always say ‘I can’!
