3c are the landscapers of the future!

11th November 2014admin

3c are developing their landscaping skills as I type! With our VW project being all about the electric car, the children are working in their trios to create a plan for our estate of what needs to be around in order for people to buy an electric car.  Children are using a map from Google to look at what our estate looks like now and plotting new roads/streets,  houses, shops and charging points. Everyone is in a very high learning zone and excited about the plans for the future.

Year 6’s Silverstone (Home of British Motor Sport) ignite trip!

7th November 2014admin

Over the past two days, year 6 have been visiting Silverstone, home of British motor sport! This was to ignite our learning for our next project ‘Aerodynamics’, which coincides with our last project for VW.

The children had a tour of the Silverstone grounds, including looking at a map of the different areas of the track and the history relating to those different areas, a tour of the pit lanes, the control centre and we even got to stand on the podium!

We has an exciting tour of the Porsche Centre and even got to sit in some Aston Martins, Ferraris and single seater race cars! We finished the morning by having a tour round a working garage.

After lunch, we had an exciting workshop afternoon making balloon powered cars and improving our cars to make our cars the fastest! We even had a race at the end!

What a fantastic day! A special thank you to the two parents for helping us on this day, it is very much appreciated. Another thank you to Victoria at Silverstone for a well run and fun day out out. After this exciting start, we can’t wait to see where our next project takes us…

Class 2b learn how to sell a car!

28th October 2014admin
This afternoon, Class 2b have learnt how to be effective salespeople. Three members of the VW team kindly gave up their time to work with the children in our very own showroom! The children learnt how to meet and greet a customer and how to assist them in buying one of the vehicles on display in the Brooklands Farm showroom. They mastered confident handshakes and maintained a confident manner throughout each sale. The VW team were amazing, and they all commented on how much they enjoyed working with the children. We can’t thank them enough for their help!

The Ancient Greeks- Gorgon Medusa!

28th October 2014admin

Year 3 have really enjoyed their project ‘The Greeks’ so far this half term. They have become fully immersed in this and have produced some excellent work both in school and at home. So far, they have learnt a range of Greek myths including ‘The Snake Haired Gorgon’. Children used drama to explore this myth where they took on the role of different characters. This then helped children to write parts of this myth as a class and finally write their own version of a myth. Valuable skills have been learnt along the way such as becoming a ‘magpie’ to steal ‘wow’ vocabulary to up level our writing. Keep up the good work 3c! 🙂

6b Real Science Day at MK Discovery Centre!

28th October 2014admin

6b had a break from VW week to join the Real Science event at the Milton Keynes Discovery Centre.

We started the day by learning about the dangerous dust Asbestos. We learnt that while it can be highly dangerous it can also be used to sound proof, add strength to or control the heat of buildings.

Our next session involved us getting up close and personal to Tinkerbell… the pony! We learnt the history of horses and their uses over the years. We also learnt that ponies are becoming increasingly endangered. We ended our session by getting to stroke Tinkerbell and some of us even fed our left over apples to her!
Following this, we had a session on Design Press, printing anywhere! We learnt the process of printing images, pictures and drawings onto various cups and t-shirts. We then took part in a competition to design a bookmark! The winning design will be printed onto a bookmark and sent into school after half term!
After a quick break we were back to learning! Our next session involved learning about the ‘flight or fight’ response in our body. The children really enjoyed the expert’s enthusiasm for the topic and learnt a lot about the hormones involved in our responses and reactions.
Following this, we had a session on Gel making! The children had a talk from a representative from the global company P&G. They even had a go making their own gel!
We then had a break for lunch! We had so much fun running around the grounds of the Discovery Centre.
After lunch, we were back to more exciting learning. Our next session was one of the children’s best sessions. It was about bee hives! We learnt loads about bees, including pollination and the threats to bees in the wild. We even got to try some honey!
Following our bees session, we then had an amazing session which again was one the children’s highlights of the day, with the Canal River Trust. We looked at different types of bridges and the uses of bridges. We then looked more at the structure and then had some team work problem solving activities to make our own bridges!
Our last session of the day was about water and soil. We learnt about the properties of different types of soil and we now know an experiment to test them out. Watch out parents, children will be testing your soil in your gardens! We looked at the different soils under the microscopes and noticed lots of important characteristic of soil and how it helps us to live.
Thank you to all the parents for their support in dropping their children at the Discovery Centre. Thank you to all the experts for giving us the most brilliant science day out and for inspiring the children to be scientists in the future! Also, thank you to Mr Atkins for joining us and helping us out all day!
I think you can agree, it was a jammed packed and exciting day for us all in 6b!
