Chocolate Questions

17th November 2014Mrs S Taylor

Today we made a start to our new topic… Chocolate! We wrote down all the questions we wanted to answer during our topic and displayed them in the classroom. We hope to answer them all through our learning this term.

Some of our questions included:

Do cocoa beans grow in England?

How much chocolate is sold every day?

Who grows cocoa beans?

How is chocolate transported around the world?

Life Saving Learning!

3rd October 2014Mrs S Taylor

This week we had an exciting visit from the RNLI. The children enjoyed talking to the volunteer about lifeboats and how to be safe around water. They even made their own lifeboats at play time and acted out being saved by the RNLI! We then went on to learning about a very special woman called Grace Darling who lived in a lighthouse and rescued a ship that had crashed. We became Grace Darling experts by ordering the story and quizzing each other on Grace Darling facts. Next week we look forward to linking our science to how we could have helped Grace Darling with her rescue.

Here we are wearing life jackets.

Here we are with the lifeboat we built.

We have ordered the story of Grace Darling and explained what is happening in each picture.

Inspired Writers

3rd October 2014Mrs S Taylor

At the end of last week Year 2 had an indoor beach set up as part of our Lighthouses project! We used it as inspiration for our writing as we designed new settings for the ‘Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ story. The children produced some fabulous drawings with very imaginative ideas. As we continue our learning, over the coming week we will be writing the beginning of our story and including descriptions of the characters and our settings.

We used pictures of beaches to inspire our drawings as well.

2c Setting Descriptions

3rd October 2014Mrs S Taylor

In literacy today we wrote setting descriptions for the beginning of our Lighthouse Keepers Lunch stories. As a class we collected our ideas together and then had a go at some shared writing to help generate our success criteria. We then went off to have a go on our own and produced some fantastic pieces of work! Below is an example of some of the writing.

Here is Macy’s writing. I love how she has used ‘in the distance’ to describe where her thunder and lightening is.

Here is Aakriti’s writing. She was fantastic at growing her learning and having a go at her next steps.

Super Number Bonds!

10th July 2014Mrs S Taylor

This week in maths we have been learning our number bonds to 10 and 20. The children have been practicing their mathematical reasoning using these three key questions to help them:

What do you notice?

What is the same?

What is different?

Here is a picture of the numicon number bonds we created for our working wall.

WW number bonds to 10

We used bead strings to find our number bonds to 20. We looked for number patterns and found a logical way of finding all the possibilities.

We matched up addition and subtraction sentences and found our own groups of number sentences.

2c Learning!

3rd July 2014Mrs S Taylor

Today the children took big steps in their maths learning! We have been looking at place value and children have been using the words ‘tens’ and ‘units’ to talk about numbers. We have been exploring numbers and using ‘maths talk’ to explain our reasoning.

We have used tens and units apparatus to build numbers:

Tens and Units

We tried different number challenges and used ‘maths talk’ to explain what we found:

I am already looking forward to our next lesson tomorrow!

Year 2 Promise

1st July 2014Mrs S Taylor

Today in Year 2 we made our class rules and created a ‘class promise’ together!

As a class we talked about the expectations of Year 2 learners and what we thought would be important in our classroom. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and could talk about the impact our class rules would have on our learning!

We decided our rules would help us Open, Grow and Believe so we wrote them onto hearts, stars and medals before decorating and signing our class promise.
