Under The Sea

By V Holloway15th April 2016

Wow! What an amazing first week back for the Summer Term. I have seen such high learning zones this week and have seenĀ reciprocal relationships growing as children have been sharing their knowledge about Under the Sea.

This week we have been busy learning our talk the text for our information text about Jellyfish!

‘Did you know that a group of jellyfish is called a bloom?’

We have started to create our under the sea environment for our classroom and shared area using the knowledge we already had about sea creatures.

Today we learnt about the different parts of a fish! We labelled our fish and wrote sentences about the functions of the different parts.

‘Did you know that fish always have their eyes open because they don’t have any eyelids?’

We are really excited about our trip to the Sea Life Centre next week to see all these amazing creatures!

Pj day!

By V Holloway5th March 2016

Year 1 loved coming into school in their pyjamas on Friday and even though they were dressed ready for bed they were still enthusiastic in their learning and showed high learning zones!

To celebrate book week, we spent the afternoon listening to stories in our pyjamas! We particularly enjoyed Julia Donaldson’s Monkey Puzzle and it inspired us to do some writing. We thought we could use some of our knowledge collected in our ‘Growing’ project to write about a daffodil looking for its Mum!

Here are some photos of us listening to stories and working in groups to write:

We also had reason to celebrate in 1e today as Szymon was awarded his Determined Pin, we are very proud of you! And we won the attendance trophy for the second week in a row! Well Done 1e!

If you go down to the woods today…

By V Holloway3rd March 2016

you’ll find hedgehog dens!

1e had a wonderful time at Rushmere yesterday morning when they went to do some learning in the forest!

We had such a busy morning focusing on the different animals that lived in the woods. Herons were first on the list, we got to see how big herons had to build their nests and even looked through a telescope to look at the herons and their nests which were high in the trees!

We played a game to discover the things that we and animals need to survive. This included : air, shelter, water, food
After a walk into the woods, we had a challenge set for us from Matt (our ranger). Could we build a den for Harvey the hedgehog using our knowledge of what an animal needs to survive?
Here are some pictures of us busy making dens in small groups and the finished result:
We had a fantastic morning at Rushmere and definitely learnt a lot! The children’s behaviour was amazing and it was lovely to see such high learning zones and enthusiasm!

Growing Ignite

By V Holloway23rd February 2016

Year 1 on Countess Way ignited their next project yesterday, ‘Growing’.

We did lots of fun activities including:

Tasting fruit and vegetables from around the world and guessing where they come from.

We tried exotic fruits like passion fruit, avocado and papaya- even using our WOW words to describe their taste and texture.
We planted bean seeds to keep in our greenhouse.
We started our bean diaries by writing instructions on how to plant a bean seed, we will be observing our bean seeds closely in the next few weeks to see how they grow!
We did observational drawings of flowers, plants and leaves and labelled the different parts.
We had to look very closely at the shapes of the petals and leaves!
As you can see, we have made an excellent start collecting lots of new knowledge and learning for our project! We can’t wait to find out more.
Thank you to the parents who have donated seeds already and for the parents who helped yesterday- it is greatly appreciated!

A trip to the woods

By V Holloway14th January 2016

1e were very lucky to go to Forest School at Rushmere this week!

We wrapped up warm and headed for the woods. We learnt lots about trees, and played a game in partners where we took in turns to be blindfolded and had to feel the tree to describe it, was it smooth or rough? Did it have lots of branches? Was it thin or big?

We also learnt how to tell the age of a tree! We had a go at counting the rings inside the tree!

After warming up and having a snack in the visitor centre, we used the sticks we had collected to make different shapes. We were even challenged to make a pentagon!

Finally, we did a quiz. All the answers were numbers, for example how many legs does a spider have? We created a number line using all the numbers!

It was really fun learning outside in the woods!

We are growing in Tree Week!

By V Holloway11th December 2015

Year 1e have been growing their knowledge of trees this week- we read the story the Giving Tree to start thinking about all the different things that trees give us! We have been collecting lots of facts, which we will use to write an Acrostic Poem! Acrostic poems were a bit tricky at first, but we have been very determined and we are starting to get the hang of them now!

We have also been thinking about what we can give to other people, so far we have come up with:

Presents

Gotcha Smile

Love

Friendship

Eye contact

Listening ears

Cuddles

We have also been focussing on Peer Reviewing our work in trios, using success criterias to gold things that have been done well and we have even had a go at giving some next steps. We are really helping each other to grow our learning!
