Making Lanterns

19th November 2015V Holloway

We were very busy making lanterns in preparation for our lantern festival this morning. With help from our resident artist, Paul Smith, we used willow and masking tape to create the structure for our lantern. It was very fiddly and we had to be very determined as we worked as a team.

We then covered our structure with tissue paper and glue.

It was fantastic to see such good team work and determination. Thank you to the parents who attended the parent’s lantern making workshop. It is really helping to build the community spirit at Countess Way.

We can’t wait for you to see our lanterns tomorrow evening!

A trip to Fen Street

By V Holloway19th November 2015

Yesterday the whole of Brooklands Farm Countess Way went to visit the rest of our Brooklands family at Fen Street to practise our Lantern Festival! All the staff were amazed and proud of every single child’s determination, resilience and enthusiasm as they walked between the two sites. It was also lovely to see the year 3’s and 4’s be such caring, considerate and thoughtful role models to the younger children.

The lantern festival rehearsal was very exciting and we can’t wait to share all our lanterns, songs and dances with you on Friday!

Great Fire of London Ignite!

By V Holloway5th November 2015

Year 1 on Countess Way had a fantastic day for our Great Fire of London ignite! The outfits and costumes worn by the children were incredible and really helped us feel like we were in the Stuart Era!

Our day started very strangely, with the lights off and the classroom in darkness, only lit by a roaring fire! We learnt that in the Stuart era they didn’t have electricity so had to use candles as lights.

We were then told about how the Great Fire of London started, the teachers were amazed with how much the children knew already!

There were lots of different activities for us to do in the morning:

Candle Making

Sewing
Making Herb Bags at the Apothecary
Bread Making
Writing with feather quills and ink
Throughout the morning, as well as completing our Stuart Era activities, we listened to the rest of the Great Fire of London story.
In the afternoon we wrote a diary entry, just like Samuel Pepys! We use time connectives (First, then, next, finally) to write about our exciting morning!
A massive thank you to the parent helpers who came yesterday and ran some activities for us, we really couldn’t have done it without you!

London’s Burning, London’s Burning…

By V Holloway3rd November 2015

Year 1 have made a determined start to the new half term. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for our new project, The Great Fire of London, has been astounding! It has been lovely hearing the children sharing the facts they learnt over the half term, it has provided us with a fantastic start to our project!

Yesterday we spent time collect our knowledge about how the fire started and how it affected the people and buildings in London! We discussed some of the reasons why the fire spread so quickly.

Today we have done some BIG ART! We spent the day with Miss Broome (our art specialist) who has helped us create some flames and Stuart Style houses for our project area! We can’t wait to show the finished result, here are some photos of us at work:
Finally, we are super excited about our Great Fire of London Ignite day tomorrow! We will be doing lots of different activities from the Stuart era. Don’t forget to come dressed up in Stuart era clothing!

Sharing Our Learning!

By V Holloway22nd October 2015

Thank you so much to all the parents who came to look at our All About Me books today! It was so lovely to see you all and the children absolutely loved sharing their learning with you.

Today we spent time revisiting the learning about our senses! We used all of our 5 senses to explore different foods. We then thought of WOW words to help us describe the taste, smell, feel and sound of different foods!

We are looking forward to starting our new project- The Great Fire of London- after half term!
