Finding Half

By Mrs S Taylor23rd March 2016

Yesterday we spent the morning investigating halving!

We talked about how when we halve we split into ‘two equal groups’ or ‘two equal parts’.

We carried out lots of different activities including chalking shapes outside, measuring different water containers, finding different ways to shade half and creating garden patterns which have ben split in half!

It was fantastic to see the children so engaged in their learning and we saw lots of learning zones 4 and 5!

Here we are investigating:

Pj day!

By V Holloway5th March 2016

Year 1 loved coming into school in their pyjamas on Friday and even though they were dressed ready for bed they were still enthusiastic in their learning and showed high learning zones!

To celebrate book week, we spent the afternoon listening to stories in our pyjamas! We particularly enjoyed Julia Donaldson’s Monkey Puzzle and it inspired us to do some writing. We thought we could use some of our knowledge collected in our ‘Growing’ project to write about a daffodil looking for its Mum!

Here are some photos of us listening to stories and working in groups to write:

We also had reason to celebrate in 1e today as Szymon was awarded his Determined Pin, we are very proud of you! And we won the attendance trophy for the second week in a row! Well Done 1e!

If you go down to the woods today…

By V Holloway3rd March 2016

you’ll find hedgehog dens!

1e had a wonderful time at Rushmere yesterday morning when they went to do some learning in the forest!

We had such a busy morning focusing on the different animals that lived in the woods. Herons were first on the list, we got to see how big herons had to build their nests and even looked through a telescope to look at the herons and their nests which were high in the trees!

We played a game to discover the things that we and animals need to survive. This included : air, shelter, water, food
After a walk into the woods, we had a challenge set for us from Matt (our ranger). Could we build a den for Harvey the hedgehog using our knowledge of what an animal needs to survive?
Here are some pictures of us busy making dens in small groups and the finished result:
We had a fantastic morning at Rushmere and definitely learnt a lot! The children’s behaviour was amazing and it was lovely to see such high learning zones and enthusiasm!

Growing beans in our greenhouse!

By Mrs S Taylor24th February 2016

We have been checking up on the beans we planted during our ignite day. We have added a little water to them to help them grow. They are getting lots of sunlight in the shared space. We will update you on how they are getting on soon.

Growing Ignite

By V Holloway23rd February 2016

Year 1 on Countess Way ignited their next project yesterday, ‘Growing’.

We did lots of fun activities including:

Tasting fruit and vegetables from around the world and guessing where they come from.

We tried exotic fruits like passion fruit, avocado and papaya- even using our WOW words to describe their taste and texture.
We planted bean seeds to keep in our greenhouse.
We started our bean diaries by writing instructions on how to plant a bean seed, we will be observing our bean seeds closely in the next few weeks to see how they grow!
We did observational drawings of flowers, plants and leaves and labelled the different parts.
We had to look very closely at the shapes of the petals and leaves!
As you can see, we have made an excellent start collecting lots of new knowledge and learning for our project! We can’t wait to find out more.
Thank you to the parents who have donated seeds already and for the parents who helped yesterday- it is greatly appreciated!

Shared Reading

By Mrs S Taylor29th January 2016

Every Thursday afternoon at 2.30 for the last two weeks there has been a very calm atmosphere at Countess Way. We have started a shared reading time across KS1 & 2 and it is a truly magical experience! All staff have offered a book to read and the children have signed up to the book they want to listen too. It has been lovely to see the excitement, high levels of engagement and children whisked off into the fictional worlds of some of our favourite authors.

This half term the books include:

The Borrowers

The Magic Finger

Danny the Campion of the World

The Magic Faraway Tree

Wind in the Willows

Fantastic Mr Fox

Here we are listening to the stories.
