Peer and Self Assessment

13th October 2014V Holloway

Part of becoming an individual in year 5 involves taking responsibility for our own learning journey and supporting others in theirs. For the past couple of weeks we have started to peer and self assess our work in Maths, Literacy and Project. We have made clear success criteria’s about how we should mark our own or each other’s work.

Today was the first day we used our literacy and maths peer and self assessment booklets. They take us step by step through the marking process to ensure we help each other to grow our learning.

We set each other next steps, in a green box, which we take from the lesson success criteria. We also make sure to write a positive comment in a gold box!

Peer and self assessing not only gives us more responsibility and control over our own learning it also encourages us to discuss our learning and to create an open dialogue. We trust each other and understand that we can learn from each other as much as we can from a teacher. Peer assessment helps us to grow our relationships as well as our learning and ensure we all stay connected.

Would Mammoths survive in the Arctic today?

8th October 2014V Holloway

Since our fantastic Ignite trip to the Natural History Museum, 5C have been very busy researching and collecting all the information they need to write their Frozen Planet documentaries which will answer our project question:

Would Mammoths survive in the Arctic today?

We have been comparing the Arctic and the Ice Age, identifying the similarities and differences between the climate, landscapes and animals. We have been focusing on the mighty polar bear and the King of the Ice Age, the mammoth, looking at their lifecycles and adaptations.

This week we will start writing and practising our documentaries so that we are ready to start filming next week!

The Snow Leopard

6th October 2014V Holloway

In 5C we have been reading the story Snow Leopard by Jackie Morris.

We have just finished our ‘imitate’ phase where we talked the text:

Magpied exciting vocabulary, boxed it up and identified key features of the story. We can use all the great ideas and vocabulary in our own writing. Our working wall is being used effectively by the class. We use it to show our learning journey and to help us with our own writing.

We are now moving onto the innovate stage of our writing sequence. As a class we changed the character and setting of the Snow Leopard and created a new box it up plan. We will write our story independently using the box it up plan and in shared writing groups with Miss Holloway.

We look forward to sharing our end results with you!

An Icy Trip Back In Time

5th September 2014V Holloway

Today year 5 went back in time to discover the Ice Age when they ignited their Frozen Planet Project with a trip to the Natural History Museum to see the Mammoth Exhibition!

We had a fantastic time learning about how Mammoths survived during the Ice Age and we were lucky enough to see the best preserved Mammoth in the world! We collected lots of facts about the Ice Age and the animals that lived during it to use in our Frozen Planet Project this half term.

Thank you to all the adults who helped us on this trip.

Every child was a star and were excellent ambassadors for Brooklands Farm! Well done year 5!

Welcome to year 5!

7th July 2014Mr J Peters

We have had a great start in year 5!

Last week we made our class rules and created a ‘learners promise’ together! We also created our protective hands which are displayed in the classrooms.

In our classes we discussed the expectations of Year 5 learners and what it means to be individual. The children now have a clear understanding and are well on there way to earning their ‘individual’ badges.

We have started learning our upper key stage 2 songs ‘Gold’ and ‘Roar’ which the children are enjoying.

This week we are starting to write our own poems about The Journey of Brooklands Farm and have started their hand based art project.
