Year 6 being Observational Scientists!

16th December 2014admin

Year 6 are loving tree week!

After an RE day yesterday looking at the Bodhi tree, today year 6’s are being scientists!

At the moment they are observing the effects of and links between temperature and the rate in which a plant grows.

Later they will be looking at exceptions to the rule- how certain plants have adapted and changed to suit their environments linking back specifically to the Bodhi Tree!

This will all come together for our end product of our tree week display!

Where does the bodhi tree originate from?

16th December 2014Mrs c Hern

This morning, year 6 have been busy using reliable resources to find out where the bodhi tree originated from and other countries in the world where it grows.

The children have been using an atlas to find the grid reference for these countries.

The learning zones and buzz in the classroom has been amazing!

Aerodynamics D&T afternoon

12th December 2014Mrs c Hern

This week, the children have been busy completing their assessments!
We have been incredibly proud of all of the children and think that they are definitely showing that they are strong and powerful learners.

This afternoon, the children have been busy creating their final aerodynamic car design. The learning zones have been high and the dialogue between pupils have been fantastic.

Congratulations to our three year 6’s for achieving their strong and powerful pin!

They have shown that they can manage their own emotions, be a role model to other children and take on leadership positions within our school. They are showing through their own individual personalities and qualities that they know how to contribute to Brooklands Farm Primary School and share with others the school’s vision.

We are very proud of you in 6b. A massive congratulations!

6b Real Science Day at MK Discovery Centre!

28th October 2014admin

6b had a break from VW week to join the Real Science event at the Milton Keynes Discovery Centre.

We started the day by learning about the dangerous dust Asbestos. We learnt that while it can be highly dangerous it can also be used to sound proof, add strength to or control the heat of buildings.

Our next session involved us getting up close and personal to Tinkerbell… the pony! We learnt the history of horses and their uses over the years. We also learnt that ponies are becoming increasingly endangered. We ended our session by getting to stroke Tinkerbell and some of us even fed our left over apples to her!
Following this, we had a session on Design Press, printing anywhere! We learnt the process of printing images, pictures and drawings onto various cups and t-shirts. We then took part in a competition to design a bookmark! The winning design will be printed onto a bookmark and sent into school after half term!
After a quick break we were back to learning! Our next session involved learning about the ‘flight or fight’ response in our body. The children really enjoyed the expert’s enthusiasm for the topic and learnt a lot about the hormones involved in our responses and reactions.
Following this, we had a session on Gel making! The children had a talk from a representative from the global company P&G. They even had a go making their own gel!
We then had a break for lunch! We had so much fun running around the grounds of the Discovery Centre.
After lunch, we were back to more exciting learning. Our next session was one of the children’s best sessions. It was about bee hives! We learnt loads about bees, including pollination and the threats to bees in the wild. We even got to try some honey!
Following our bees session, we then had an amazing session which again was one the children’s highlights of the day, with the Canal River Trust. We looked at different types of bridges and the uses of bridges. We then looked more at the structure and then had some team work problem solving activities to make our own bridges!
Our last session of the day was about water and soil. We learnt about the properties of different types of soil and we now know an experiment to test them out. Watch out parents, children will be testing your soil in your gardens! We looked at the different soils under the microscopes and noticed lots of important characteristic of soil and how it helps us to live.
Thank you to all the parents for their support in dropping their children at the Discovery Centre. Thank you to all the experts for giving us the most brilliant science day out and for inspiring the children to be scientists in the future! Also, thank you to Mr Atkins for joining us and helping us out all day!
I think you can agree, it was a jammed packed and exciting day for us all in 6b!

6b and 6c market Research

21st October 2014admin

Carrying on from yesterday’s exciting Volkswagen launch, this morning the children came in bright and early ready to ask the parents of Brooklands Farm about their needs in a car.

In the pouring rain, year 6 were polite and approached parents as they came into school. They asked them questions from a questionnaire they had devised yesterday afternoon about including questions about what type of car they drive, what is important to them in car and what colours they like.

After this session, Year 6 came back into school and are currently sitting in their groups going though the data looking at what the needs and wants of the parents are!

Internet Safety!

15th October 2014Miss Rebecca Snowdon

Year 6 had a great Internet Safety session on Monday with our visitors from Hazard Alley. We learnt about the risks that are involved with using the internet, how to identify these risks and how to protect ourselves.

Take a look at our pictures.
