A King in 1b!

By c pinder11th October 2016

Every week, one boy and girl from Fen Street are picked to be our King and Queen for the week. The children picked consistently show Brooklands Farm behaviour in the classroom and on the playground. This week, 1b got their very own King and we are very lucky to have such a positive role model in our class!

Year 1 detectives solve a mystery!

By 9th October 2016

On Friday when we returned from lunch Miss Draper’s chair had disappeared! All that was left were a few dusty hand and foot prints. We set about trying to solve the mystery and luckily for us some detectives came in to help us. They shared with us what they look at to solve mysteries. We learnt that we would need to look at hair and eye colour, height, hand and foot prints. To help us, we also made some magnifying glasses so we could look at clues up close. During the afternoon, the detectives sent through some additional clues. We now had a list of four possible people responsible. Looking carefully, we were able to identify a couple of the eyes and hair styles. By the end of the day we had discovered where Miss Draper’s chair had disappeared too!

Perhaps you can share your findings with your parents!

What have 1A been up to?

By c pinder7th October 2016

This week 1A have been working very hard. We have been doing lots of writing, focusing on changing the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ to ‘The Smartest Pig in London’. In Maths we have been applying our knowledge of number bonds to add numbers up to 20.

This week we finished our Sustainability project, where we made our Determined pots. We discussed what things we could grow in our pots, the children decided cress would be a really good idea!

Today, we started our ‘All about me’ project. Miss White and 1A came back into the classroom to find that Miss White’s teacher chair had been borrowed from the classroom. The children had to work really hard to work out who in school had borrowed our chair. We had the Police come and help us to think about investigating people’s characteristics. We focused on hair colour, eye colour, height, hand and feet size to work out who the culprit was. Thank goodness 1A solved the mystery, Miss White is now reunited with her chair!

A mystery in Year 1

By c pinder7th October 2016

Today Year 1 had a surprise visit as part of their ignite for their ‘All About Me’ project. When the children came back from their lunch, they noticed that all of the teacher chairs had gone missing! We asked PC Ellmer and PC Dabnor to come in and talk to us about how they solve problems at a police station and used that to help us do some detective work! Throughout the afternoon, we found random clues which lead us to eventually solving our mystery of the missing chairs – Can your child remember who had borrowed our chairs and why?

Well done Year 1 for a fantastic day full of high learning zones!

Here are 1b showing off or engaging in their learning.

High learning zones in year 1c

By 5th October 2016

We have been showing high learning zones this week in our Literacy and Maths lessons. In Literacy we have been writing out our innovated text about “The smartest crocodile in the pond”, using sound mats to help us. We also have our very own Snappy the Crocodile in class! Feel free to take a look. In Maths we have been solving addition number sentences. We have also been looking at our number bonds. Number bonds are what we will be focusing on in our Flexibility & Fluency maths sessions – can you practice these at home?

0 + 10 = 10, 1 + 9 = 10, 2 + 8 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10, 7 + 3 = 10, 8 + 2 = 10, 9 + 1 = 10, 10 + 0 = 10

Kinetic Letters

By c pinder5th October 2016

Kinetic Letters handwriting is in full swing in 1b! Here are some of the children practising their letter formation on our sand trays, this will then be applied in their handwriting books for morning work. I have noticed many parents getting involved with our handwriting by helping their child to grow their learning in the mornings or listening to their child explain our scared monkey and brave monkey helpers to them.

A message from Miss White

By c pinder30th September 2016

Just a quick thank you all of the parents in 1A who have been using the new Communication book. In the morning it is my priority to focus on the children’s learning as soon as they come in. I would be grateful if you have any queries to write them in the Communication book, which is located on the shelving unit in between the two classrooms.

Thank you.

Have a great weekend.

Sustainability

By c pinder30th September 2016

Following our whole school sustainability project, the children in 1b have been looking closely at the different fruit or vegetables we could grow at school for our school dinners. We have also continued to look at a variety of materials and decided that clay would be best for making planting pots with. Here are the children creating their own, we will later paint them in our year group colour – Orange for determined!
