Cadbury’s World

18th November 2014Mrs L Odell

Today we ignited our chocolate project with a trip to Cadbury’s World! The children learnt about the history and origin of the cocoa bean and how it is used today to make delicious chocolate treats! We will be continuing this learning in class, but thanks to the trip the children are well and truly inspired and excited to get this learning journey started!

Huge thanks to Mrs Ashington, Mrs Mentha, Mr Morrison and Mr Pugh for helping with this trip. I hope you all had a great day?!

Thank you to all parents who volunteered to help with this trip.

Here are a few photos of today’s adventure.

The Plague comes to Brooklands

18th November 2014V Holloway

On Monday, year 5 arrived at school and they were transported back to the year 1665. Boys and girls were separated into different classrooms, with the teachers being very strict, much like in a Stuart era school. The morning started with the boys and girls learning, in silence, an extract from Shakespeare’s Macbeth which they then had to recite to the class.

For the remainder of the morning the girls learnt valuable skills such as sewing and baking, ensuring they were well prepared to be housewives! They baked gingerbread biscuits and also practised their handwriting.
The boys also practised their handwriting and spent time playing games such as chess and draughts. Mr Peters was very strict!
However throughout the morning we noticed Miss Courtney coughing a lot, then she started scratching and big red boils appear on her arms! As she spread her germs, the illness started affecting some of the year 5’s and they came out in red ringed rashes! Eventually, we decided to quarantine those who were displaying symptoms and called the Doctor. The doctor confirmed that they had the Plague so a red cross was put on the door to warn others that it was contaminated with the Plague!
After lunch, to help protect us from the Plague we made herb bags just like they did in the Plague in 1665. We used cloves, rosemary and thyme, along with some mint and rose essence. Also, we made silhouettes of rats to decorate the corridors with!
Finally, because our final product is to make a Horrible History episode about the Plague, we watched some episodes of Horrible History.
Year 5 had a fantastic time igniting the Plague and can’t wait to continue their learning about it in order to create their Horrible History documentary.

What a Day!

18th November 2014jenniferhover

Year 1 had a great time today on their walk to the allotments.

They looked at the different types of vegetables that grow there. They also had the chance to look around a greenhouse and pick some salad leaves. They also were able to pick some vegetables to bring back to school.

The children are all inspired to grow vegetables and we are going to have a go at planting our own and watching them grow at school.

Chocolate Questions

17th November 2014Mrs S Taylor

Today we made a start to our new topic… Chocolate! We wrote down all the questions we wanted to answer during our topic and displayed them in the classroom. We hope to answer them all through our learning this term.

Some of our questions included:

Do cocoa beans grow in England?

How much chocolate is sold every day?

Who grows cocoa beans?

How is chocolate transported around the world?

Year 4 become Bear Grylls survival experts

17th November 2014admin

On Monday this week, the children in year 4 were able to learn some fantastic techniques to help them survive in an extreme environment.

They gained some superb knowledge from some incredible Parks Trust employees and were able to put some of these ideas into practice: learning how to create effective shelters, collect and filter water, find nutrition that was edible and learning how to create an effective fire to provide warmth.

The children were inspired by their ignite day and returned to school with some amazing questions and ideas for their learning in the new project.

A special thank you must go to the parents who supported us on the day and for all of the parents who volunteered.

Skoda Citigo – Amazing adventures!

17th November 2014admin

Click on the link to watch the newly released advert for the Skoda Citigo, created by the brilliant Brooklyne in Class 2b! He wrote the advert himself and then recorded himself reading it aloud. We then used Windows Movie Maker to add Brooklyne’s voice recording onto a video of the Skoda Citigo.

Skoda are expecting their Citigo sales to go through the roof after this video goes live!
