Year 1 detectives solve a mystery!

By 9th October 2016

On Friday when we returned from lunch Miss Draper’s chair had disappeared! All that was left were a few dusty hand and foot prints. We set about trying to solve the mystery and luckily for us some detectives came in to help us. They shared with us what they look at to solve mysteries. We learnt that we would need to look at hair and eye colour, height, hand and foot prints. To help us, we also made some magnifying glasses so we could look at clues up close. During the afternoon, the detectives sent through some additional clues. We now had a list of four possible people responsible. Looking carefully, we were able to identify a couple of the eyes and hair styles. By the end of the day we had discovered where Miss Draper’s chair had disappeared too!

Perhaps you can share your findings with your parents!

A mystery in Year 1

By c pinder7th October 2016

Today Year 1 had a surprise visit as part of their ignite for their ‘All About Me’ project. When the children came back from their lunch, they noticed that all of the teacher chairs had gone missing! We asked PC Ellmer and PC Dabnor to come in and talk to us about how they solve problems at a police station and used that to help us do some detective work! Throughout the afternoon, we found random clues which lead us to eventually solving our mystery of the missing chairs – Can your child remember who had borrowed our chairs and why?

Well done Year 1 for a fantastic day full of high learning zones!

Here are 1b showing off or engaging in their learning.

Gone fishing…

By V Holloway20th April 2016

Year 1 on Countess Way had an amazing ignite trip to the Sea Life Centre on Monday! We saw so many different types of fish and sea creatures! Some of our highlights were:

  • touching starfish!
  • looking at the octopus
  • watching the seahorses
  • learning about the difference between skate and stingrays
  • walking through the tunnel, watching sharks and turtles swim around us
  • seeing the amazing colours, shapes and sizes of all the different fish
  • watching the jellyfish
  • the 4d cinema experience

It was such a busy and we learnt an unbelievable amount about different sea creatures. We have not only collected lots of new knowledge about Under The Sea, it has also inspired us and motivated us to learn more!

We have used some of our new knowledge to write What Am I? riddles about different seas creatures, can you solve this one written by 1e:

I have 3 hearts.

I have blue blood.

I spray ink to escape from predators.

What Am I?

Year 1 were all fantastic Brooklands Farm ambassadors, they opened their eyes, ears and dialogue to grow and share their knowledge of under the sea. They also opened their hearts to the members of the public and other schools which were there, by being polite and patient. Well Done year 1!

A massive thank you to the parent helpers who came with us on this trip, it couldn’t have happened without you. We hope you enjoyed your day with us!

Pictures to follow soon!

Robots Ignite Day

By D Gray19th April 2016

We’ve had a fantastic day of robots today. The children conducted research into different robots and how they’re useful, used LEGO to try and build their own robot or robotic structure and immersed themselves in the programming app Scratch! Involvement levels were fantastically high and the quality of work produced was fantastic.

Incubating eggs for our ‘Growing and Changing’ project

By Mrs C Kingsman15th April 2016

Welcome back to the summer term! The last, but by no means least important, term for learning.

In nursery (at Countess Way) we have begun our learning for our Growing and Changing project by investigating a variety of chicken eggs. The children helped me set the eggs into an incubator and have really enjoyed checking on the eggs through the week. We talked about how we make eggs in different ways e.g. by scrambling or frying them and also foods that they are in such as cakes and pancakes.

Our core book this week and next week is The Little Red Hen. The children in nursery have begun to think about the meaning of the story and why it is important to work together as a team.

To help your child’s learning at home you could make something which contains egg with your child. Talk about how we all change as we grow. You could look at your child’s baby photos with them and talk about how they have changed. Would be great to share baby pics at school too!

Any questions please come and talk to a member of the team.
