This week have been looking at shape and symmetry. With the grid paper stuck in your homework book can you create a symmetrical pattern. This can be created with colour or colour and shapes.

 

Success criteria:

-Use a ruler and pencil to ensure shapes are all the same size.

-Count the squares carefully to ensure it’s symmetrical.

-If colouring squares make sure this is done neatly inside the square.

-Start your pattern from the mirror line and work towards the edge.

 

Literacy

This week we have been looking at a nonfiction information text. Can you produce an information page on an area of space you are interested in. This must focus on meteors, asteroids and comets. You may do all three on one page or just choose one area.

 

Success criteria:

-Include the features of an information text: third person, facts, diagram/picture, caption, title, sub headings,

-Make your writing and images clear for people to read.

-Make sure you have included bullet points.
Challenge: Use interesting openers in your sentences – (ly, ed, ing, conjunction, adverb of time/place/manner).

As it is the winter season we would like the children to create a winter or christmas poem.

Here is an example of a few different types of poems to get you thinking.

Haiku (three lines with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third. Describe without saying. E.g. Harry Potter haiku:)

Literacy:

This week we are focusing on fronted adverbials of time, place and manner.

Can you create two sentences for each type of adverbial.

Success Criteria:

-Make sure your sentences makes sense with full punctuation e.g. full stops, capital letters and commas.

-Remember your adverbial clause needs to be at the start of your sentence.

 

Ex: adverb of time (when) = As the evening drew closer, I ran home whilst the owls hooted in the night sky.

Ex: adverb of place (where you are) = As I approached the mysterious, murky village, I noticed a peculiar sign.

Ex: adverb of manner (how you do something)= Silent and fearful, he crept through the abandoned, rotten building.

Maths – Area, perimeter and volume

The shapes for this activity are drawn on their homework sheet in their homework book.

 

Squared number = number timsed by itself. E.g. 4 squared = 4 x 4 = 16

Squared numbers help us find the area of squares as we know that the length x width = area. Using that information can you find out the area of these different shapes.

 

 

The perimeter is the distance around a two-dimensional shape. Example: the perimeter of this rectangle is 3+7+3+7 = 20.

 

 

Cubed number = number timsed by itself 3 times. E.g. 5 cubed= 5 x 5 x 5 = 125

Cubed numbers help us find the volume of a cube as we know that length x width x height = volume.

Here are the calculation policies that show the mathematical methods we use at Brooklands Farm Primary school.
There is separate policy for each mathematical operation. Within each calculation policy, there are different methods, depending on the stage your child is working at. The policies indicate a suggested stage for each year group, but please be aware that some children may be working or a stage below of above. Your child should be able to tell you which method they have used in school. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are unsure.

In grammar we have been practicing adding dependant clauses to main clauses. Your task for this week is to demonstrate what you have learnt by adding dependant clauses to these sentences.

Remember a clause must contain a verb. It can go in the middle, end or beginning of a sentence. They usually begin with ly, ed, ing words or conjunctions (so, because, while etc). Just adding adjectives is not a dependant clause. Please don’t change the original sentence.

E.G

Balancing carefully, the cat walked across the wall.

  1. The cat purred.
  2. It dove to the bottom.
  3. He slammed the door.
  4. The monkey threw a coconut.
  5. She sat back and relaxed.
  6. The snow crunched under her feet.

Challenge:
