Brooklands Farm Calculation Policies for the 4 operations in maths

By admin13th November 2015
Here are the calculation policies that show the mathematical methods we use at Brooklands Farm Primary school.
There is separate policy for each mathematical operation. Within each calculation policy, there are different methods, depending on the stage your child is working at. The policies indicate a suggested stage for each year group, but please be aware that some children may be working or a stage below of above. Your child should be able to tell you which method they have used in school. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are unsure.

Year 3 and 4 Half term homework Group c and spelling group 3

By D Gray23rd October 2015
Mr Gray’s Class Half Term Homework Group C

Please complete and return this homework by Wednesday 4th November.

Literacy

(This should take no longer than 30 minutes.)

Success Criteria

  • Check your punctuation (capital letters, full stops and commas).
  • Try to use adventurous vocabulary in your sentences.
  • Proof-read your sentences.
  • Can you self-assess your work once you have finished, is there an area you need more support with?

Challenge 1 Conjunctions: A conjunction is a word that joins two sentences or clauses.

Use one of the following conjunctions to complete these sentences: when, if because, so, while, although, before and after.

The men were very cold …. they wore gloves.

Ronaldo was sad ….. his team-mates had lost their football match.

Messi read a book ….. he waited for the next match.

Now think of three more sentences using some of the following conjunctions: when, if because, so, while, although, before and after.

Challenge 2 – Proper Nouns: A proper noun is specific and unique, whereas a common noun is much more generic. Proper nouns always need a capital letter

Example: Common noun – Would you like some chocolate?

Proper noun – Would you like some Dairy Milk?

Underline the proper noun

  1. The boy threw the ball to his dog, Wilson.
  2. My friend moved to China.
  3. The new restaurant that was built was a McDonald’s.

Can you think of 3 sentences which use a proper noun? It could be a country, month or a brand of food.

Challenge 3 fronted adverbials: fronted adverbials are adverbial phrases at the beginning of the sentence to give information on when (time)? how (manner)? where (place)? eg: Upon the wall, there sat a child. (Notice the comma after the fronted adverbial).

Can you complete the following sentences:

Before the game started, …….

Silently and sneakily, …..

Walking beside the pitch, …..

Suddenly, …..

Can you think of three more sentences using fronted adverbials?
