Cross Country

By l hearn14th November 2017

Thank you to everyone that came and supported our 24 runners on Saturday morning. It was such a fantastic sporting morning despite the rain and mud!! The children were amazing and represented Brooklands with true style and confidence.  As individuals and as teams they did amazingly, with one of our Year 6 girls finishing 2nd out of around 150!!

Thank you again to everyone that helped and supported, especially our marshals!

Year 5 Individual Homework

Due in Thursday 21st September

Project/Spelling

This week in project we have been connecting our knowledge of the Titanic to our writing in literacy. We are practising our writing skills and applying these to an information text about the Titanic (thank you for working so hard on finding facts for last week’s homework – they have been really useful!). Please can you practise these speed words for your homework this week.

Success Criteria

  • Use your different methods to practise the spellings
  • Remember which words are proper nouns and need capital letters

unsinkable Titanic magnificent
disappear iceberg additionally
although crew capacity
cruise facilities extraordinary

Reading

We have been looking at expression in reading over the past two weeks and how we can make our reading sound more exciting. Please watch the clip of Michael Rosen reading his famous ‘chocolate cake’ poem with expression. Your task is to use his technique to practise reading a part of the same poem out loud to someone else using your expression skills you have been working on.

Success Criteria

  • Volume
  • Tone
  • Facial expression
  • Small actions
  • Accents

Chocolate Cake – Poem by Michael Rosen

I love chocolate cake.

And when I was a boy

I loved it even more.

Sometimes we used to have it for tea

and Mum used to say,

‘If there’s any left over

you can have it to take to school

tomorrow to have at playtime.’

And the next day I would take it to school

wrapped up in tin foil

open it up at playtime

and sit in the corner of the playground

eating it,

you know how the icing on top

is all shiny and it cracks as you

bite into it,

and there’s that other kind of icing in

the middle

and it sticks to your hands and you

can lick your fingers

and lick your lips

oh it’s lovely.

Yeah.

Year 5 Titanic Ignite

By l hearn7th September 2017

On Wednesday Year 5 had our Titanic Ignite day. We all dressed up as first, second and third class passengers and were given a real person from Titanic so that we had a character to act as throughout the day. We really enjoyed having a Titanic style dinner in the afternoon with different food and entertainment depending on our class. While we were having our dinner, there was a sudden unexpected announcement that we had crashed into an iceberg!! We tried to evacuate quickly but found different obstacles in our way depending on our class and our gender! Luckily we all survived the iceberg crash but it helped us imagine how shocking and scary it would have been if we had been on the actual Titanic.

Year 5 Frozen Planet Ignite!

Today, Year 5 have had a visit from Oli, an explorer who has ventured through the Arctic. Oli told us exactly what it was like to live in Arctic conditions and told us fascinating stories about how he and his team survived their great expedition! After finding out about him, the children were lucky enough to learn how animals keep themselves warm in Arctic conditions, create global awareness campaigns and produce art work for our environments.

The engagement from the children has been fantastic today!

Well done Year 5!
