After our re-drafting assembly with Matt on Wednesday, we realised the importance of listening to our client and allowing them to review our designs. Therefore we met with Foundation (our clients) to share our designs and to listen to their feedback. They told us the things they liked and disliked about our designs. We are now using this feedback to redraft before meeting them again to share our final designs.
To support the design layouts, 5c have created mood boards in their design groups. We looked at the mood boards created for the new Brooklands Farm school to create a success criteria. We chose the materials and colours we want to use in our areas, and have also included pictures of example furniture and equipment.

Our next step is to share our designs and mood boards with Foundation to gather their feedback. We will then redraft our designs based on their evaluation!
5c have today started their design process. After a careful look at our client’s brief, we created our own project brief to make sure we were clear on our client’s requirements and priorities. We then split into two teams, one team was in charge of designing the layout of the space. Where would each area the client wanted go? Was it a good ideas to have a calm, relaxing area next to the noisy play area? They used a new app on the ipads to help them create this!
The other team were in charge of choosing a colour scheme, we used watercolours and paints to create different shades of colours. We worked as a team to choose the colours which we thought would look good together!
Our next step is to split into our area design teams, in small groups we will design a specific area with the allocated space and agreed colour scheme!
Also we were very lucky today to be visited by Kate and Simon who both work for Willmott Dixon. They spoke to us about the whole building process, from the design all the way to maintenance and client feedback. We learnt about the importance of listening to our clients and redrafting our designs!

Year 5 were extremely lucky today as they were the first children to visit the new Brooklands Farm Primary School!
We walked (very sensibly) to the new school, where we met the builders from Willmott Dixon! We were the first children to step into the new school, it was very exciting and a privilege!
Year 5 split into two groups. One group went on a tour round the new building, we had to wear high-visibility jackets and hard hats. We got to see all the new classrooms, as we walked round we thought carefully about how we could transform this building into a Brooklands Farm School! We had lots of ideas including colourful pieces of artwork and coloured tiles on the carpet, and of course making it clear that we are ‘weaving a learning journey’! Finally, we got the see the new school hall and the school field! As part of our building project, we are designing a space for another year group so we asked the builder lots of questions to help us with our designs!
While the other group were having their tour, the rest of year 5 had a picnic in the new school hall! We had some biscuits and squash. Miss Low really wanted our opinion on the school hall and asked how we can reflect the ethos of Brooklands Farm in there.
This morning 5c looked at a picture book called ‘Belonging’, it showed how communities grow and change over time. We explored how this changed the relationships within the book.
In groups, we ordered the stages of the book which demonstrated how the community and relationships grew over many years. We also thought of key words to describe the relationships and thought about the community we want to create at Brooklands.

We had a class circle and discussed what ‘belonging’ meant to us and our community. Here are some of the words we thought of:
socialising
conversation
satisfaction
positive
We created our own Wordles to show our top 10 words to describe ‘belonging’. We had to write our most important word using our biggest writing and the least important in small writing.

WOW! What a busy morning at Brooklands Farm! As we see Brain Week come to an end we took the opportunity to meet as a whole school to share our learning from the week. Each year group presented their learning in different ways including drama, actions, posters and writing!
We are now in our colour groups and consolidating our learning in the form of posters. Blue team are using our knowledge of the different sides of the brain, neurotransmitters, growth mindsets and how to protect our brain from injury! We are collaborating in groups across year groups to share the learning journey we have undertaken this week.
To raise awareness of our brains and how to protect them our posters must be eye catching, colourful and have a clear message! We look forward to sharing these with you!

Year 5 completed their endorphin investigation today as they spent time in a dark, silent room completing their work. We monitored our well being and learning zones and the majority of us found that our well beings dropped when in this situation because endorphins were not being released. We have written diaries this week to monitor our personal emotions and learning zones, writing how we were affected by the situations we were in. Also, we plotted our changes in well being and involvement on line graphs and drew our conclusions from them.
Finally, we started creating our presentations (posters and drama) about our learning to share with the rest of the school tomorrow.
Here are some examples of line graphs and diary entries:

Year 5 continued their investigation into endorphins today and chose to look at the effect of sport and exercise. We started by levelling our well being and learning zones before we started our lesson. Then we played a game of rounders which created an excitable buzz!

Brain week has begun! In year 5 we started brain week with some visitors from the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, who gave us lots of general knowledge about the brain and how to look after it.
