A day discovering Science in the real world!

What an amazing day we had on Tuesday at the Milton Keynes Discovery Centre! Have you ever wondered how Chemistry and Science are used in the real world? If yes, then ask a Year 6 student because we learnt all about it on our trip!

We discovered: the different parts of soil, how potholes are formed, how to build roads and bridges, how solar panels work, the digestive system of a horse and lots more!

Computing in Year 6!

Year 6Ā have started theirĀ Computing learning journey this week!

We have been on a QR code treasure hunt researching information about the internet and understanding which sources are reliable.

We acted as web crawlers (spiders) to help us understand how search engines choose and rank information. We looked around the classroom for an item and then wrote down its location and how many items were there. After that, we ranked our data – just like search engines do!

Last weeks Maths home learning:

In Maths, we have been growing our understanding of addition and subtraction.

This week we would like you to observe and make note of when you and your families face addition and subtraction problems at home/when you are out and about. This could be regarding: how much money is spent in a transaction in a shop/petrol station/bus station/cafe etc; how much change is given from a set amount e.g. Ā£20; how much time you spend doing an activity and therefore, how much time you have left to do something else; how much of an ingredient you need to use in a recipe etc.

Write down in Ā your homework books a couple of examples of how you and your families face addition and subtraction problems in day to day life e.g.

My mum, brother and I went to the cinema. We bought 1 adult ticket (Ā£9.85) and 2 childrenā€™s tickets (Ā£6.75). How much did we spend in total? My mum paid with Ā£30 how much change should she get?

We will be having a discussion about all of the different ways that addition and subtraction are in our lives in Maths lessons. Please do not spend longer than 30mins writing these into your books.

Today the children were so excited to share the discussions that they have been having at home about how Maths fits into our every day lives! Have a look at some of the problems that the children faced over the weekend…

Strong and Powerful Classrooms

Today, Upper Juniors have been busy designing their own classrooms. We believe that it is important that all of the children take ownership over their classrooms and work in partnership with each otherĀ and the teachers.

Some fantastic suggestions were put forward by the children and they have already started to act upon these ideas.Ā The children understand that their environment can constantly change and be adapted to the type of learning that they are experiencing. I am excited to see how their environments progressĀ over the course of the year.
