Great Fire of London Ignite!

By V Holloway5th November 2015

Year 1 on Countess Way had a fantastic day for our Great Fire of London ignite! The outfits and costumes worn by the children were incredible and really helped us feel like we were in the Stuart Era!

Our day started very strangely, with the lights off and the classroom in darkness, only lit by a roaring fire! We learnt that in the Stuart era they didn’t have electricity so had to use candles as lights.

We were then told about how the Great Fire of London started, the teachers were amazed with how much the children knew already!

There were lots of different activities for us to do in the morning:

Candle Making

Sewing
Making Herb Bags at the Apothecary
Bread Making
Writing with feather quills and ink
Throughout the morning, as well as completing our Stuart Era activities, we listened to the rest of the Great Fire of London story.
In the afternoon we wrote a diary entry, just like Samuel Pepys! We use time connectives (First, then, next, finally) to write about our exciting morning!
A massive thank you to the parent helpers who came yesterday and ran some activities for us, we really couldn’t have done it without you!

Igniting our pirate project!

By 4th November 2015

We had great fun igniting our pirate project, the children showed fantastic learning zones throughout the day and their was a lovely buzz of excitement! We started the day with a treasure hunt to find a diary entry from a cabin boy, we will be exploring this further in literacy and having a go at writing our own! We moved on to make some musical instruments and then learnt lots about who pirates are!! We are looking forward to linking sound with our pirate project and will keep the website updated with celebrations of their learning!

Igniting our Milton Keynes Project

6th October 2015D Gray

Yesterday and today, we have been igniting our project and getting excited about continuing to deepen our learning about Milton Keynes.

We played Milton Keynes Monopoly, which helped children learn the names of different places and it tied in well with our addition and subtraction focus in maths.

Today we explored the map of Milton Keynes and went on a treasure hunt! One child, surprised by the sheer size of MK, asked whether it was a map of the world!

Year 1’s (very long) Walk!

By V Holloway30th September 2015

On Monday year 1 at Countess Way ignited their All About Me project with a walk to Brooklands Farm Fen Street and then to the park! On our journey we looked at the things we saw around us, we saw houses, trees, lots of cars and lorries and builders working on building sites!

As we are reading Rosie’s Walk in Literacy,on our walk from Fen Street to the park we discussed what we could go around, over and past. We continued to explore these directions and more when playing in the park!

We jumped off the rocks.
We climbed up the climbing frame.
We slid down the slide.
The year 1 team were so impressed with how determined everyone was on our long journey and we saw such sensible, responsible walking. We can’t wait to use our experiences in our writing this week!
Also, a BIG thank you to the parent helpers who kindly came with us on our walk. We are all very grateful for you supporting us!

Titanic ignite day

24th September 2015

Year 5 had a terrific Titanic Ignite day on Tuesday!

Children spent half of the day collecting lots of knowledge about the Titanic tragedy from the expert, John,  who brought real artefacts from the ship and props from the film set for us to look at – he even gave away replicas of 3rd class mugs as prizes for individuals to keep!

The other half of the day was spent living the lifestyle of a passenger on board the Titanic in 1912. Children dressed up as 1st class or 3rd class passengers, listened to the music that the orchestra may have played during the voyage and cooked their own 3rd class meal – vegetable stew and dumplings!  After a lot of hard work in the kitchen,  they were then treated to a 1st class dessert of pears, éclairs and ice cream.

Both children and teachers had a fantastic day and we look forward to continuing our voyage over the next few weeks!

Year 3 visit the new school

By D Gray5th June 2015

Year 3 had a great time visiting our new Brooklands Farm Primary School on Countess Way. We enjoyed walking through our community and even had a little picnic on the new field! Year 3 asked some fantastic questions and have grown their understanding of how a building gets from the design stage to the finished stage.

Year 5’s Ignite Trip to the New School!

By V Holloway2nd June 2015

Year 5 were extremely lucky today as they were the first children to visit the new Brooklands Farm Primary School!

We walked (very sensibly) to the new school, where we met the builders from Willmott Dixon! We were the first children to step into the new school, it was very exciting and a privilege!

Year 5 split into two groups. One group went on a tour round the new building, we had to wear high-visibility jackets and hard hats. We got to see all the new classrooms, as we walked round we thought carefully about how we could transform this building into a Brooklands Farm School! We had lots of ideas including colourful pieces of artwork and coloured tiles on the carpet, and of course making it clear that we are ‘weaving a learning journey’! Finally, we got the see the new school hall and the school field! As part of our building project, we are designing a space for another year group so we asked the builder lots of questions to help us with our designs!

While the other group were having their tour, the rest of year 5 had a picnic in the new school hall! We had some biscuits and squash. Miss Low really wanted our opinion on the school hall and asked how we can reflect the ethos of Brooklands Farm in there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the new school and felt very privileged to be the first to visit!

Year 6 Brain week so far…

By Miss Rebecca Snowdon20th May 2015

Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed the brain week so far!

We have carried out some interesting research about the brain and had a visit from ‘The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust’ to hear a first-hand account of what it is like to live with a brain injury.

We then applied all of the knowledge we acquired into models of the brain, which we labelled and wrote accompanying paragraphs describing each section and its role within the body.

Thank you to Mrs McCarville and the other visitors from The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust –  we learnt so much from you!

A Titanic Ignite

16th April 2015V Holloway

Year 5 ignited their Titanic project today! We were very lucky to have a visitor join us for the day. He brought in lots of artefacts from the Titanic and its sister ships as well as pictures of the Titanic. We even got the opportunity to try on lifejackets from that period! We asked lots of different, interesting questions about the Titanic so that we had lots of knowledge to continue using in our project!

We also spent some time developing our collaging skills by creating our own waves scenes using different shades of blue and white, as well as different collaging techniques.
As a year group we have worked together to collage a big picture of the Titanic! It is still a work in progress but here are some photos of what we have achieved so far:
